ARTISTIC STATEMENT:

I don’t know, but I will find out… Let me google it…. Do you know why?...

What is becoming more and more apparent to me (as twenty-something graduate), is how little I understand about the world. Sure, there are many things I do know, and others that we could make an educated guess at. But the overwhelming consensus is I am astonished by the amount I still have to learn about how, why and what happens on this planet, or more confounding, in the universe...

...what is equally compelling is my desire to find out.

But then, how many people do actively seek to understand the world beyond classroom days and training courses? – Not many. This in itself is confusing considering we all carry the answer to most of the world’s “wonders” in our pockets. With the pressures of ‘modern-day life,’ in this fast-paced, ever turning, the technological dependent environment we inhabit, perhaps people haven’t got the time, or simply the need to find out. The majority of us are comfortable to accept our basic classroom knowledge of the world around us and happily welcome new inventions without question. We seem content to leave the know-how and scientific explanations to a fictional group of ‘Einstein’s’ all wearing lab coats and goggles in a laboratory somewhere.

Flux Dance Theatre aims to provide awareness of scientific theories and improve the accessibility of the scientific ‘knowhow’ to our audiences, through dance theatre production, performance, and educational workshops. Through our own curiosity, we hope to inspire people to actively find out more, and to be a tool for scientists to raise public engagement and awareness of their work. By creating work that is inquisitive, captivating and engaging we hope to provide a platform for open discussion of scientific research, ideas, and theories. Our approach is not one of direct demonstration of the science, but one that invites curiosity and intrigue through imaginative, innovative and fresh choreography.

"Working with FLUX has been a joy. They’ve been the perfect creative partner for us – engaging and responsive, it’s been easy and fun to put together a really unique dance event based on our research. They worked really well with our researchers, all of whom came away raving about the process, and with a deeper understanding of how we can more creatively engage the public with our research”

Translating Science into Dance

I recently presented at the London Science Communication (Scicomm) Symposium and spoke about my experience of working across art forms, combining dance and science. I highlighted that it is important to acknowledge that using dance as a form of public engagement is not about demonstrating science but translating it into movement. What is exciting is how close one can get to the other without undermining the integrity of one another.

A unique evening combining a scientific talk with inspirational dance.

Hear Irina Pulyakhina from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics talk about her work as her science is interpreted by FLUX, a dance company specialising in translating scientific principles into theatrical form. A one-off event exploring curiosity and creativity in their many and varied forms.

This work was performed at Oxford Science Festival and later at Green Man Festival and Bluedot festival 2016.
